The idea of being spontaneous and adventuring with no idea where you’re going to.
It’s thrilling, I have always been the type where everything around me from start to finish has always been carefully planned, the gods always laughed at my struggle to create order of course, but that’s a story for another time.
I have always had this obsession with wanting to go away, not that I had anything to run from, I just always was fascinated with the drifter life-style. So, ever since I was old enough to have these ideas and thoughts, I began creating lists, bags, plans to do this. I had so many ideas, and in my research I found (though everyone has different reasons for doing things) that many people had similar ideas and helpful suggestions.
This all seems very vague but I want to give you some vocabulary words and their definitions before I continue:
B.O.B – Bug out bag AKA-your get up and go bag, this is a bag a lot of preppers* have at hand by the door of their houses or easily accessible to grab-and-go if the SHTF* granted, obviously my purpose for having one of these would just be easy access to adventure, but their reasoning is…solid.
Preppers- People who are obsessed with being prepared for an emanate danger, they believe there’s going to be some nuclear fall-out or another world war or aliens or some kind of trouble that might be waiting around the corner.
I love to think that one day something crazy might occur and I’d be accidentally prepared for it because of my fascination with this sort of thing, and while they’re out proud that they’re right and showing off, I’m just sort of waving in the corner of the back of the News Cast, only to get asked what I’m doing at this prepper evacuation site, and just sort of shrug my shoulders, “happy coincidence I guess”.
SHTF- Sh*t hit the fan – every prepper has an idea as to why they do their prepping, so instead of saying their individual fears they use this sort of umbrella term to cover any and all events.
In researching I’ve found people who have created bunkers, boats, 4-wheel vehicles that have all been altered in order to prepare for these events. This may actually be what inspired and created my love of Jeeps, I currently have a 2000 Jeep TJ, and I absolutely adore it, it’s not exactly what one would call the best Bug-Out-Vehicle (BOV)* (a vehicle you use to split at a moments notice), because of the size, but it has 4-wheel drive and enough space in the back for the basic things we need.
I’ve been slowly altering my B.O.V to be a little more reliable, 35 inch tires, a 3.5 inch lift, we swapped the doors out to full doors, and we’ve upgraded a lot of the old parts. We don’t take crazy long road trips with it, but the 4 hour drives we’ve done, have been comfortable all things considered.
In a way this would make my jeep part of my EDC* (Every Day Carry) which is usually a small bag or purse you take everywhere with you, in my case I don’t carry purse but my rig goes everywhere I go so I guess it’s part of my set up. Your EDC would be things like your license, your insurance, maybe a small emergency kit, some people carry around a knife (I don’t but I know why some would), just little things to make sure if things go south, at least you have things close to you.
In my case my EDC would be, my license, a 20$ bill (yep that’s it), my phone and a charger, sunglasses…probably should consider making a proper purse or book-bag, I haven’t done that in a while, have a small kit of things I might need on hand, is better than being surprised later on.
Like my prepper-buddy always says “better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.”
