We knew this Loli was going to be a challenge but every day it’s something new with her. After work one day, I had to stay a little later for lesson planning and meetings, the usual. I finally get home and as I’m parking my car and here comes grandma running down the stairs, dragging her little cane behind her like an afterthought. “NINA!” She screams at me, and of course I hop out of my jeep and look at her eyes wide from the sudden shock, she’s an old woman but she goes down the stairs like someone lit a firecracker up her ass today.

“Que vieja,” ‘what old lady’, it seems a lot meaner in English but I can assure you it’s a term of endearment, I’m so tired, what could she possibly want from me.

“No entres sin mi!” I freeze looking at her, she just told me not to go into my house, without her, what could possibly be going on that I’d need her as back up!? This is too much, I’m trying not to roll my eyes at her, I know she means well, she then grabs my wrist in her death grip and whispers to me, ‘he’s cheating on you.’ She says in her way.

I’m now putting the pieces together, but you know how sometimes you just tag along for the ride, just to see what happens? This is the case here, so I unlock my door and she pushes past me with her cane running up into the house. My boyfriend’s preparing lunch and the woman, she’s convinced he’s allowed into our house without my knowledge, is sitting on the couch.

“PUTA!” She points her can at the woman, and screams “Y DESCARADO!” and smacks my boyfriend on the shoulder with her cane.

Now needless to say I’m in tears at this point, not because I’m upset, but because the woman she just called a whore, is my boyfriend’s sister. When this old woman turns to me and raises an eyebrow realizing something is wrong I got a well deserved cane to the shin, “que sea la ultima ves que te defiendo.” ‘this is the last time I’m defending you.’ I took a while to catch my breath and watch her cross the street and go up the stairs.
