Pandora’s Box?

I take frequent strolls, and usually this is how I bump into interesting characters. So today I took a walk through my neighborhood and ended up at a little cafeteria outside of our area. I sat down ordered some coffee and began tippity typing away, searching for inspiration.

I got distracted, like I usually do, and began scrolling through photos on Instagram when an older gentleman approaches me and point over my shoulder at a photo of a statue that had appeared.

“You know they can’t make them like they used to anymore.” He says disappointed, I figure he’s going to go on a tangent about how this generation isn’t creative and all of these negative things.

Boy was I wrong.

“Why do you say that?” Did I just open Pandora’s box?

He pulls the chair out in front of me and sits down with his coffee in hand.

Yep…I did.

“Michaelangelo’s statues weren’t replica’s of people.” He says sipping his coffee, “they were people.”

“Yeah they were real people…he made replicas of.” I clarify, now having completely captured my interest.

“No.” He says sternly, “they WERE people.” He emphasizes and continues, “He had students, and people who would practically worship the group he’d walk on. He’d enter the town center, pick his model and take them to his studio, there he’d prepare their bodies to create molds of their bodies. He’d place creams on their skin that would slowly harden,” He grabs my computer and turns it towards himself, showing me a photo of a hand with clear veins coming down it. “They didn’t realize, until it was too late, that he was forming this compound around them out of liquified marble.”

He really was going into detail about this. I know for a fact…or at least I think I do, that you can’t liquify marble…I don’t think so anyway.

He must’ve seen my face with doubt all over it, “He died never having shared his secret. There are people inside those statues.” He said with conviction.

I.

Can assure you.

This wasn’t the Pandora’s Box I thought I’d stumble upon today.
